TouchType - Now with Spell Check

Tue, Oct 21, 2008

Uncategorized

Last night the first update to TouchType went live on the iTunes App Store.  This update includes save and load functions, which enable users to save text for reuse in subsequent email messages.

The most significant upgrade, however, is the incorporation of a full-featured spell check function.  I am really proud of this addition.  It works in 86 languages and is implemented in a manner that does not strain the device’s resources.  Many thanks to the individuals who helped beta test this new version.

Thank you, thank you!! I’m sorry to say that this is such a needed update for me but having “someone” do a quick look over my emails for mistakes before they go out is a must. I am having one problem and I think that it must be user error, but I can’t add custom words to the dictionary. Any help would be great, and thanks again for this great app.

  2. Mike Schneider Says:

    Hi Luke,

To add a custom word to the dictionary, you just need to tap the top row in the spell check results. For example, if TouchType flags the word “Luke” as spelled wrong, by tapping on the top row of the results it will keep the word spelled as “Luke” in the body of your email, and add it to the custom dictionary so it won’t be flagged as wrong the next time you use it.

Let me know if that helps. Thanks for the feedback on the application. I am glad you like it.

    –Mike

The only thing that I could not stand about my iPhone was the email. Why I couldnt spell check or get a landscape keyboard is beyond me but that is Apple for you. Looks pretty but not functional. Anyway TouchType was the best thing that happened to this device. It accctually allows me to now use the email. At .99 its amazing that you can get a better more functional email than mac could through together. I look forward to future releases.

Thanks again this product is five star.

    Mike,

Your application really helps make my iPhone more productive. There is one way it could be even more productive for me.

If you could add a phrase library, like Easy EMail, that would finish it off. I use TouchType most often, but also use Easy Email, not for the fonts and colors, but for the phrase library.

Combine the functionality of the two and we’d have a complete winner.

    Thanks for your app

  5. James Says:

In the description it mentions that it supports multiple signatures. I have yet to find this feature. Can you point me in the right direction?

  6. Mike Schneider Says:

    Hi James,

The next version of TouchType will have video instructions which I am hoping will make use of some of the additional features more clear. To create email signatures, you just need to create the signature in the text field in TouchType, once you like the signature hit save. This will add the signature to your library of saved text items. To load the signature, you will want to hit the load button, which cycles through the saved text items. Once the signature you want to use is showing, position your cursor at the top of the text field and type your message.

This method would also solve Anonymous’ request for a phrase library. You can save fully drafted email messages to use over and over again if you like.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Once i have saved a phrase using the save and load key how do i deleat it from the scroll list.

  8. Thomas Says:

When will the touch type support text messaging?

  9. Mike Says:

    Hi Mike,

In response to your question about deleting text from the saved text items. If you load the saved text into the text view by hitting the load button, the save button will automatically change to a delete button. If you hit the delete button it will remove that item of text from your saved items.

    Thomas,

We are working on something interesting involving SMS for another application, but it is looking like TouchType itself will not support text messaging. At least not until Apple changes the iPhone OS to support interaction with the SMS program. We have submitted this as an issue to Apple for consideration, but we aren’t expecting them to make changes to the operating system.

    Thanks,

    Mike

i just updated and when i press load it shuts down … please help … i love this program and am sorry i updated

  11. Mike Schneider Says:

    Hi Wallace,

The update went live last night and we uncovered some bugs, including a problem with the new subject line. The core functionality of the program still works, but the subject line and save/load functions have been failing for some people. The bugs that we identified have been fixed and are pending approval by Apple now. Hopefully the next version will go live within a week.

Is there a way to downgrade? I don’t care for the blue coloring of the text and I don’t need the additional icons up top. I think it was just about perfect before the update, it seems like it’s trying to do too much now.

also if you have the subject line filled in you can’t send an email. Once I figures this out I am back and running, still a great app.

  14. Sebbie Says:

    Hi,

I purchased the application but where does it show up on the iphone after syncing with itunes? I cannot see it anywhere and when I try to resync, it says it is already there.

    Thanks

  15. Ash Says:

Initial programme was great, was a bit peeved of, update was causing problems, impressed with the package. There are many a time, that there is no wifi available, meaning that i can not use the spell checker. It would be fantastic, if there was a spell checker/ dictionary located on the iphone, with UK English dictionary. Like many other users i would say this is by far the best application for the iphone.

  16. sly Says:

I updated this application and since then I cannot open the application anymore.
What is the problem. Thank you.

  17. Tony Says:

Hi! I love the application, but as of 11/13 it no longer works - I installed the most recent update, and now when I try and update Twitter it freezes my phone (so much that the phone rebooted and told me I had to connect to iTunes to do a total reset!)

I hope this gets fixed - I won’t be able to use TouchType otherwise! :)

  18. Jessica Says:

Hi I love this application and the update with spell check is amazing.
However, there seems to be a bug. I typed a subject on the subject line and hit the “send to e-mail” button. It gave me that pop up that asked “email or twitter” and I chose e-mail. It didn’t do anything. It didn’t crash or anything, it just sat there. I fiddled around a couple more times then deleted the subject line (reversed my steps in hopes to find the issue) and it suddenly worked out fine.

I could be mistaken, but I’ve been unsuccessful in adding a subject line to a new e-mail and sending the text in Touch Type to e-mail.

Either way I can deal without that. I am totally sold on this app!

  19. stefano Says:

Hi, just a question! is this program functioning only with e-mils or it works also with Sms?

  20. HeloCaptain Says:

It would be nice to have the option to SAVE the subject line when saving text items to the library of saved text items.

  21. glenda Says:

Pls help me. I’m getting a failed result in the twitter. May I know
Whatshould I write in the twitter credentials?

  22. Ric Alonso Says:

Your application is nice, but there are some problems which causes me to ask for a refund, as promised.
First of all is the fact that, because of the subject line, I am only allowed to see two rows of text at a time. This makes editing what you are writing difficult, especially in a long email.
Secondly it’s the way I’m supposed to use signatures. After saving a signature I have to remember to sign my email first, and then write it. This is completely backwards. I should be able to add the snippet.
And with all of the signatures I would like to use, having to scroll through them one at a time, and only being able to see them partially, makes this application not the one for me.
Good work on the spell checker. It’s very nice. But I need to see more rows and be able to add a signature at the end of my email.

Thank you much - Ric Alonso

ps - you said to email you for a refund, but I could not find an email contact for you, so I posted this message.

  23. Gary Says:

Hi, you have a great app with one small bug that I find annoying. When I send email messages I end up with two signatures. I can’t find a setting that allows me to disable this. Now, I have to remember to delete I e of the signatures each time, before sending mail.

  24. David Brown Says:

How do I see what words I’ve added to the custom dictionary and remove selected ones?

  25. Mike Schneider Says:

    Hi David,

To review the custom dictionary, tap the little i button at the top of the screen (information). then tap the settings button. From there the custom dictionary button will take you to a list of words in your custom dictionary that you can review and delete as needed.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike
